2020 SBALC Graduate Jocelyn McKay

Hello, my name is Jocelyn McKay. I originate from Pine Creek Mb, however I was born and raised in Winnipeg Mb. I’ve recently come to discover my background as a Metis woman, it came as a shock to hear all the past stories shared from elders within my family and to learn further into my status. All that I have been learning has reminded me of my resiliency and given me the courage to want to succeed in life and break the cycle.

Growing up I was unable to see the value of an education, during my high-school years going to school was never prioritized due to my home life an the ongoing adversities I was facing. However, I have made peace with my past by seeking counselling and realizing that there are other ways to live in this world besides being stuck in “survival mode” due to intergenerational trauma.

I have set out to explore my inner-self and capabilities through education. It has done me great wonders so far and I’ve grown to regret not making it a priority during my younger years. After 10 years of being a high-school drop-out, I can finally say with great honour that I graduated this year with a Mature Student Diploma at Stevenson-Britannia ADL! This was a place where I grew to cherish, a place where I found my voice, experienced endless amounts of opportunities, and not to mention all the wonderful people I met!

I’m currently four months into my 1st year at Red River College, attending the Youth Recreational Program associated with the Boys and Girls Club of Winnipeg. My purpose is to one day be able to advocate for children and youth, this desire has sprouted from my personal experiences with CFS growing up and feeling like I never had a voice. I currently have achieved my First aid/CPR Certificate, NVCI Certificate, and my Food Handler’s. I also obtained a transcript record of al A’s and A+’s so far! These are just a few of the things that I never thought I would accomplish.

In conclusion, in order to flourish one must push past the uncomfortable feelings of “fear” to learn and grow, realize that it’s never too late to find your purpose, and believe in yourself when others don’t. “Education is the greatest engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine worker can become the heard of the mine, that the child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another.” – Nelson Mandela
